While this independently owned establishment has modernised in tune with the times, its old-fashioned charm and original features hark back to a more genteel and leisurely era. The Windsor profess itself on generation of families who return time and again to breathe in Hermanus’s famous champagne air in a comfy and warm home-from-home environment. The hotel was then bought by Ales Luyt, a renowned angling fisherman, in 1940 and became the preferred accommodation of many rock anglers from around the world who came to Hermanus to reel in a great variety of the plentiful fish found off the coastline. After some years of slow decline, the Windsor was purchased by Bazil Clark-Brown who, with is greatly supportive wife Eve, set about returning this great institution to its former glory. Additional buildings were added, including the West Wing, and their eldest son, Garth Clark-Brown, bought the hotel in Garth has remained faithful to the core traditions and values of the Windsor, offering the comforts of home in a relaxed atmosphere to the man in the street at affordable prices. FERNKLOOF NATURE RESERVE Visit the Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers extraordinary scenery and breath-taking views with hiking, walking and biking trails suited to all fitness levels. The 60 kilometers (around 37 miles) of walkways and trails that zigzag through the reserve can take you to the picturesque Lemoenskop outlook point, the Three Dams, Galpin Hut, the waterfalls and several other beautiful and photo inspiring locations. The reserve has also given us the landscaped and colourful Fernkloof Gardens situated at the entrance to the reserve. There is also plenty of lawn space and shady trees for a scenic picnic. SHOP THE HERMANUS COUNTRY MARKET The Hermanus Country Market is a small, but soulful, local traders market. Its creative stalls offer an abundant array of fresh organic locally farmed produce, homemade delicacies, artisan breads and spreads, probiotic yogurts, handmade cheeses, home smoked fish, venison biltong, free-range eggs, wheat-free bakes, tea, coffee, juices and smoothies, a variety of arts & crafts, as well as live music and handmade crafts, pottery, jewellery and clothing. The fair trade quality goods, delicious food and drink, and buzzing atmosphere offer a well-rounded authentic market and some feel-good fun for family and friends. GROTTO BLUE FLAG BEACH Grotto BeachGrotto Beach is a Blue Flag certified beach famous for its pristine stretch of untouched sand, coastal and marine life, spectacular mountain views, gentle shorebreak and splendid lagoon at the mouth of the Klein River. Although the waves aren’t ideal for surfing, the lagoon is well suited for many water sports, such as canoeing and kite-surfing. The spacious beach gives its visitors plenty of room for picnics and play, but braai-facilities are also offered on a green field behind the beach restaurant and at the parking lot on the lagoon side. The tidal pool is secluded and offers a safe and calm place to swim and enjoy the ocean water without the crashing waves. This is a glorious spot for snorkelling during low-tide and gives snorkelers a sneak peak of the marine life found along our coastline. The pool boasts a magnificent view of Walker Bay, where Southern Right Whales can be spotted during season. The local rock-rabbits, known as Dassies, can also be found hopping across the rocks. Watch out for Seagulls and Dassies scavenging for food, as we don’t encourage feeding our wildlife.
